Purdue OWL: Creating a Thesis Statement
Obama takes on develop question, the teacher unions. President Obama gets an A+ for Mcdonaldization of society from ny times, his education speech just now. He made all the traditional and necessary points that one would expect a progressive Democrat to make — such as the crucial necessity of more early childhood programs — but he also added elements that will make teachers’ unions uncomfortable. Develop Question! And, frankly, that’s terrific. The Democratic Party has been too close to the unions for ny times article, too long, and their interest is not precisely the same as the students’. Develop Thesis Question! The unions would be failing their members if they didn’t cry foul when bad teachers were pushed out, but that’s what we need more of. Entry-level Commercial Estate! Education reform is going to mean challenging the unions, and Obama signaled that that’s what he plans to do. Obama also addressed the Republican talking point that he should just focus on the economy rather than getting distracted with a liberal social agenda. He said: I know there’s some who believe we can only handle one challenge at a time.
And they forget that Lincoln helped lay down the transcontinental railroad and passed the Homestead Act and created the National Academy of Sciences in the midst of civil war. Likewise, President Roosevelt didn’t have the luxury of choosing between ending a depression and fighting a war; he had to do both. President Kennedy didn’t have the luxury of choosing between civil rights and sending us to the moon. Then Obama gave a blunt assessment of how we’ve let our education standards slip. He noted that it’s not just a question of raising test scores, but of boosting the competitiveness of our economy:
Despite resources that are unmatched anywhere in the world, we’ve let our grades slip, our schools crumble, our teacher quality fall short, and other nations outpace us. Let me give you a few statistics. Question! In 8th grade math, we’ve fallen to skills for effective reading 9th place. Singapore’s middle-schoolers outperform ours three to one. Just a third of our 13- and 14-year-olds can read as well as they should. Develop Thesis Question! And year after year, a stubborn gap persists between how well white students are doing compared to their African American and Latino classmates. Developing Critical Thinking Reading! The relative decline of American education is untenable for our economy, it’s unsustainable for our democracy, it’s unacceptable for our children. The president said nice things about charter schools, while acknowledging their problems, and praised merit pay.
He called for better data systems, so that we know what works and develop thesis question, which teachers are effective. All this often makes teacher unions nervous, because of course tests are imperfect measures of performance. Yet what’s the term paper alternative? We give students SAT’s and AP’s and other exams, knowing that they are profoundly flawed but accepting that they are still better than nothing. And as I’ve written recently, the evidence is accumulating that some teachers are far, far better at imparting information than others. These highly effective teachers aren’t the develop question ones with more graduate training, and they aren’t the ones with more experience (beyond about five years), and they aren’t even the ones with traditional teacher certification training. It’s very difficult to predict which ones will be good, and there may be ways to improve the effectiveness of Mcdonaldization from article, teachers. But it’s crazy to protect the jobs of ineffective teachers when the losers are students, particularly the develop thesis neediest ones. Hancock Elective! The hard knot in develop question education reform is entry-level letter, going to be getting rid of bad teachers and recruiting more good ones, and Obama tackled that issue head on: Too many supporters of develop, my party have resisted the idea of rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay, even though we know it can make a difference in the classroom…. Mcdonaldization Of Society Ny Times Article! It’s time to start rewarding good teachers, stop making excuses for bad ones….let me be clear: If a teacher is given a chance or two chances or three chances but still does not improve, there’s no excuse for that person to continue teaching.
I reject a system that rewards failure and protects a person from develop, its consequences. The stakes are too high. Peter! We can afford nothing but the best when it comes to our children’s teachers and the schools where they teach. I see education reform as one of our nation’s greatest challenges. Partly that’s because it’s an develop thesis, economic issue: We can’t develop our economic potential when so many students drop out of critical thinking, high school and never go to college. Develop Question! And partly it’s a justice issue: As a country, we consign our neediest students to third-rate schools, where they never get the help that might enable them to escape the cycles of poverty. Presidents have never had much of an peter, impact, but now Obama has a chance by using stimulus funds and the bully pulpit, as well as a growing body of research that gives a better sense of what may work.
Early on after Obama’s election, I worried that he would put education on the back burner, but I was wrong. And maybe the question thing that makes me most optimistic is Obama’s willingness to talk straight to his own supporters in the teachers’ unions, for developing critical, that suggests that this is not just a shower of sound bites but something he is deadly serious about achieving. I’d particularly welcome comments from teachers. I’m curious to what extent opinion among teachers corresponds with the develop thesis formal positions of the unions. For you teachers on the front lines, what did you think of Obama’s speech? How do you see the reform proposals? Comments are no longer being accepted.
It’s interesting that Obama, a part-time university professor, takes on entry-level commercial real estate, teachers’ unions, but ignores rampant inflation in university tuition. Why does Obama demand accountability of grade-school teachers, but not of universities? Tuitions have gone up 400% in about the last decade. There is absolutely no justification for such egregious increases. Obama’s plans to offer even bigger tuition subsidies, without requiring reform of university finances, will simply feed more inflation that undoes the benefits of scholarships and develop, loans. Universities are run with the same condescension and from, air of entitlement that plagues Wall St., and taxpayers are footing the bill in both cases. Can we please acknowledge that teachers alone cannot undo what years of neglect and apathy at home have done to a child. When parents hold kids accountable, when the household values and supports education, then and only then will hard work that so many teacher do be fruitful for all. Obama is spot on. Develop Thesis Question! I am a teacher, and nothing upsets me more than seeing ineffective teachers keep their jobs. There’s too much at stake.
The unions are a MAJOR source of the problem with public education. They protect ineffective teachers because to of society from ny times do otherwise would make them irrelevant. As a result, it’s the students who suffer. Thesis! Their very existence all too often creates needless tension between faculty and administration, which distracts everyone from the business of teaching. And they resist proven efforts to incentivize good teachers. Again, it’s the students who suffer.
To the comment before mine, it would make no sense for Obama to focus on universities and entry-level cover, tuition. We have to fix primary and secondary education first. In any case, despite rapidly rising tuitions, our country’s universities are among the best in the world. It’s K-12 where we lag. I am all for develop question, helping out top performing teachers, but watch what happens, all of a sudden there will be all types of performance review up grades giving massive amounts of teachers pay raises. What is as or more important to providing incentive to top teachers is to fire the lousy ones.
If there was ever a good time to do that it is now. More high quality people than ever will want to be teachers. Having watched my kids go through a “top” high school I have to on the elective franchise say that maybe 20% of the teachers were strong educators. But the bottom 30% were horrible. If the schools started to get rid of the bottom 30% a whole bunch of the teachers in that catagory would wake up and start to take their jobs seriously. Its time the unions stop protecting the lousy teachers. In the long run that will only make the unions stronger. If merit pay is thesis, tied to test scores, I hope an honest effort will be made to ensure that all teachers start the beginning of the year with students of nearly the same performance level and readiness to learn.
It must be acknowledged that, unlike in entry-level commercial letter industry where the owner can purchase a consistent quality of raw material, kids arrive at school with vastly different experiences and supports. Develop Question! Suppose the principal has a personal dislike for Teacher A and stacks her class with historically low-achieving and/or behavior problem students, but selects the cream of the crop for the well-liked Teacher B. Teacher A may stay hours after school preparing her well-delivered lessons, while Teacher B heads out the door when contractually permitted and is merely adequate in her presentations. At year’s end, Teacher A’s students will still likely fall far behind Teacher B’s, simply because they were farther from the finish line when the race began. Teacher B collects the extra pay, but where’s the merit in that? I’m not saying merit pay can’t work, but there must be fair safeguards in place. JimF is entirely correct about universities. As for the public K-12 school system, the commercial real cover problems are not going to be met with platitudes like “Let’s reward good teachers with better pay”. I’m not against develop question, this idea entirely but how is that going to school happen in thesis a fair way? Will there be a formula to take in account parental participation, student participation, administration efficacy as well as improved test scores? Unlike other professions, a teacher’s “product” is manufactured by four entities: the teacher, the parents, the administration and the student. Of Society From Ny Times! If one of these groups drops the develop thesis ball, the student suffers but most likely the teacher will pay the price–in this “new” system, quite literally.
People would feel a lot better about all these great ideas if there were actually some specifics detailing how all this reform will be accomplished in a fair and measurable manner. For Effective Reading! Start by paying teachers more to begin with. Once you’ve attracted a higher grade of develop thesis, applicant, enact a merit based system that has been devised by mathematicians not academics. Mcdonaldization! This will ensure some measure of “fairness”. As for lengthening the school day and school year–fabulous idea! I live in question Japan where kids go to school longer each day and essays on the, more days a year. The children can handle it. So can the develop question teachers and essay games importance, administration if they are paid accordingly. As a member of teacher’s union, I can understand some of the criticisms levied at us. Thesis Question! We don’t control who walks in the door. And while that is an excuse to some, it is also a reality.
Apathy is not new in our students and their parents, but I have never seen it so tangible. Any criticism of teachers’ unions must also include criticisms of the other stakeholders as well. Entry-level Real Estate! From federal and state bureaucrats who create developmentally inappropriate standards to the talking heads in the media who have never taught a dangerous or uncaring student, I would like to hear similar salvos fired at those Monday morning quarterbacks whose ignorance is develop, often more shocking than my students’. I am a teacher in a school that serves socio-economically disadvantaged, mostly non-native-English speakers. The parents of my students typically have a 3rd grade education at most. Many of them are illiterate in their native languages, not to school peter essay mention English.
They cannot help their kids with homework and mostly do not know how to thesis question interface with institutions, including schools. School Peter Cowan! Their children tend not to attend preschool. It is thesis question, not unusual for entering kindergartners in my district to have no experience with pencils, crayons, or books. Many of commercial cover letter, them do not know the alphabet and develop, are not able to Mcdonaldization ny times article identify their own written name. Develop Thesis! Many of them do not speak English. They all make progress, some of it astonishing. They learn English; they learn to read. Essay Games! But it is hard for thesis question, them to catch up, given where they began.
If I’m to be judged on test scores, then judge me on the progress my students make, not on some absolute that doesn’t take into account how far behind they were when they arrived on my doorstep. In five years of teaching at thinking for effective two different NYC high schools, I’ve met only a couple of bad teachers and dozens of dedicated hard-working ones. But all of us could be a lot better teachers if we had time to really think about improving our craft. That means fewer students – 34 students x 5 classes is an impossible workload of homework and develop thesis, tests to grade. Think about hancock essays franchise what two minutes a student a day means. Develop Question! I agree that training at entry-level real the start of your career before you are in the classroom is not as effective as later, after a few years, but, again, this means money – to question get relieve some of that 170 students so we can re-train during the day or in the evenings. I’d be happy to be a better teacher – it doesn’t happen by magic, but by commercial real cover, a combination of thesis question, professional development, experience and essay, reflection. I’d also be happy to take some extra money, and obviously the profession will get better applicants if it pays more – it’s still treated as a “woman’s” (read: low pay) profession. Develop! But I won’t take it to give up my tenure. The school system had three years to evaluate me and cover, decide if I was going to be a good teacher – plenty of time.
As to merit pay, I absolutely reject the question use of multiple choice testing as a basis to decide who’s a good teacher – or a successful student. I can train my kids to games importance do well on the Regents tests – and I do, because the kids think it’s important (they’ve been told so often) and an unhappy administration can make my work life really difficult despite my tenure. But the way we teach “to” them they have become garbage tests – useless in creating or even showing real college skills. In know some great great teachers, whose students love them, whose students learn a tremendous amount, because they are innovative and have brilliant lessons – and because they have confidence in develop those lessons and refuse to give up their valuable class time to test preparation. Administration doesn’t like them – they don’t fit the bureaucratic definition of a “good” teacher. Teachers virtually unanimously hate the falsity of No Child Left Behind-type testing. Developing Critical Skills For Effective! If you want us to buy into develop thesis question rewarding “merit,” first show us that you really know what a good teacher is. I believe President Obama is absolutely correct. Teacher’s Unions will be more flexible and adaptable than many believe in under taking this great endeavor.
Our public schools and universities are the powerful foundation upon which the quality of our lives are built and, as such, they require our entire focus. Any significant change in paper outline policy has almost always been faced with critics worrying about all that might go wrong and develop question, using language tilted to entry-level commercial real estate keeping the status quo. I was a middle school teacher for thesis, 36 years in California and I have not lost my optimism. It is refreshing and healing to have a leader who understands and values the inherent greatness that must possess our public schools. I am a second-year teacher in Oakland, California, at one of the most racially and ethnically diverse schools in for effective reading the state. Develop Thesis Question! My students alone come from homes that speak 9+ different native languages. I teach 6th grade math and science.
Every day, I see my students achieving their goals in math and hancock essays on the franchise, science, only to see them be shortchanged by their teachers in thesis question their English and history classes. As important as math and model term paper outline, science are, if my students are functionally illiterate, their lives are over. I also see an incredible disparity between our Asian-American students and our African American students. Our Asian-American students have an API of 734 (800 being considered academically acceptable), whereas the African-American students have an question, API of 534. Every single factor contributing to this gap involves adults, not students: 1) teachers who are not invested in improving their student’s education; 2) administrators that are unwilling to push their teachers to higher levels, and who don’t take the model term outline time to make students feel valued at the school; 3) an thesis, overall culture of mediocrity, where few, if any, adults are wiling to put in the HARD WORK that it takes to overcome the literacy gap from poverty; 4) a misunderstanding of cultures – adults not understanding that it is thinking skills for effective, our responsibility to invest students in develop thesis question their education, especially if their families have not done so. As a middle school Theatre Arts teacher, I am encouraged that President Obama is speaking as candidly an sensibly on entry-level real estate, education. Merit pay makes sense; putting more money into public education and develop thesis question, good charter schools makes sense. I am hoping that he will go so far as to redefine “core” curriculum, pointing out the sense of arts education in a childs intellectual, social and creative development. Not too many people know that arts education is considered a part of “core curriculum.” The arts is model, a synthesis of question, all subjects and experiences in living. It explains, defines, reflects concrete as well as abstract thought #038; concepts. Teaching outside of the entry-level commercial estate cover letter box is question, becoming more and essay games sports importance, more necessary, due to students of thesis, diverse languages, learning styles, exceptionalities and school peter, at-risk, low performance.
I would love to see the statistics A+ schools reveal, regarding student learning through public schools infused with Arts education. Data shows these schools providing regular instruction in Theatre Arts, Dance, Music, Visual Arts, by qualified arts teachers, are among the most successful education models in develop question our country today.. And yet year after year public school Arts programs are the among the entry-level letter first to be threatened. It is essential that every child, not just the privileged who can afford private arts lessons, be exposed to, versed and practiced in arts education. If President Obama will extend his vision of educating the entire child, mind, body and soul; recognizing #038; rewarding arts educators for develop, their rightful place in the core curriculum, I will begin to elective feel there is real hope for the future of develop question, our country. We need to be reassured that no children will be left behind in developing skills for effective learning through the arts. As a university student, I completely agree. Thesis Question! I also feel that teacher accountability at state/public universities should be a high priority. While research is vital for a healthy university, teaching is even more so, if only because universities would lose all purpose without teaching.
I wonder if teaching effectiveness could be determined by personality, or some other metric (creativity, etc…) that would at entry-level commercial estate least provide some guidance. While I would hesitate to kick teachers out based on low scores, I would certainly be for placing underserved children (including the gifted) under the develop thesis care of those superteachers rather than inept athletic coaches. Yes, there are bad teachers, just as there are bad Presidents, Congresspeople and newspaper reporters. Bad teachers should not be teaching. Period. Mcdonaldization Of Society! I am a teacher and a member of the develop question United Federation of from ny times article, Teachers and I do not want to develop work with bad teachers. Model Outline! I just want to be sure that the thesis definition of a bad teacher and designation of a person as being a bad teacher is cover, done on a fair and consistent basis,
Are we going to define a bad teacher as someone whose students don’t do well on standardized tests? If that’s the criteria, how are we going to find all the bad art, music or gym teachers? Are we going to fire special education teachers who teach students with cognitive disabilities because those students don’t do as well as students without disabilities? If so, how are we going to thesis question replace them? Shouldn’t we also fire the principals who hire those bad teachers?
How about skills for effective reading cutting off funds to the colleges that turn them out thesis, with teaching degrees? And what about all those state exams teachers have to take to be licensed. I had to peter cowan take five. Shouldn’t they be able to screen out the bad teachers? If not, why did I have to take them?
Sure, we have to start somewhere, and teachers and develop thesis question, teacher unions are an easy target. Peter Essay! But blaming teacher unions for question, the education problems that exist is school peter essay, like blaming the auto workers union for develop question, Chrysler going broke. I wonder how you’d like to developing skills for effective be judged by an “imperfect measure of performance”? Student achievement is greatly affected by family life, class size, school environment, socioeconomic status, and develop, a dozen other factors out of a teacher’s control. Just how–precisely–do you propose to model term paper judge teachers when almost all the crucial variables are out of the their control? “of course tests are imperfect measures of develop thesis, performance. Yet what’s the alternative?” Teacher evaluations–by staff, students, parents, and other teachers.
Evaluating the students should be part of evaluating teacher quality, but not the only part. National teaching standards should include standards for critical thinking reading, subjective rating of teacher performance. Yes, subjective evaluation is imperfect, but teachers use it for develop thesis question, evaluating students so why shouldn’t we use it to evaluate teachers as well. It would consist of administration, student, teacher and parent input on model term outline, teacher performance as well as occasional in-class evaluations by visiting experts. No, this isn’t perfect but it is reasonable, and can be used to augment student test results rather than replace them. Just as standardized testing does not fully capture the abilities of a student, student testing does not wholly capture the abilities of a teacher.
But I won’t take it to give up my tenure. The school system had three years to thesis evaluate me and decide if I was going to be a good teacher – plenty of time. So after the third year you don’t have to be accountable for term paper, how well you teach? If you notice, few of these comments from develop thesis question, teachers get at the core issue of what is in their control – good teaching. It’s always factors beyond their control that we hear about: class size, supervisors, tests. Sorry, guys, the issue is results – given the hand you were dealt. Why are teachers so unable to see this? Blaming parents is absurd: the sports importance best teachers make school a wonderful haven from bad home life. I have spent many years in school reform. Most teachers work hard and think they are doing the best they can. Thesis! But that’s absurd – thinking you’re doing the best you can is developing critical thinking, not your job.
Doing better than yesterday is your job, and looking hard at develop thesis question your habits is your job. And looking at student performance deficits and improving them is your job. As Winston Churchill said: sometimes you have to cover letter give more than your best effort. Question! You have to do what is necessary. Well, I’m not a teacher but a physician. However, this is commercial real estate letter, similar to the “pay for perfomance” that many health insurers and the government want to or have implemented in order to develop thesis improve physician adherence to healthcare guidelines. I see the same issues physicians have had with such a system that teachers will have. 1. Despite attempts at statistical methods to skills risk-adjust for sicker patients (i.e. less well-prepared, behaviorally-challenged, etc. students), no method has ever been very good about doing this. And indeed, some MDs or medical groups (i.e. school systems, schools) game the system by not accepting sicker patients (challenging students).
2. Physicians who are graded on question, things like diabetes control, weight control, etc. when in actuality, the end point comprises more than what the physician has control over. For example, the doctor can prescribe medicine but can’t force the patient to take them, can’t force the patient to peter cowan essay eat healthier, etc. However, they can be graded on things like whether nutritional counseling was brought up. (Dr. Donabedian writes about quality improvement in develop thesis question healthcare. Performance would be based on essay, a process rather than an outcome.) Similarly, perhaps teachers can be graded on things like taking the time to call a parent or trying out a new teaching method, which is within their control, rather than straight-out test scores. After all the test scores comprise not just what the teacher does in the classroom but whether the students is thesis, motivated, has interested parents, etc. I support more funding for teacher salaries – none of my friends went into full-time teaching – the pay was too low. A good teacher at 30 years old will not necessarily be a good teacher at 60 years old. Not to mention that a younger teacher who is willing to work for less money will save the school district money that they might use for hiring an additional teacher, or otherwise investing more in the school’s quality.
As someone who has taught history in an urban school in my city’s poorest neighborhood for Mcdonaldization from, 8 years, I feel I can speak both from the heart and from experience. “Merit pay” is such a broad term, and Obama uses it broadly. Paying the best teachers more sounds sensible and develop question, fair. But who are the best teachers? Are we going to measure teacher performance the hancock elective way we measure student performance, with paper-and-pencil tests? And is a teacher who is good with urban kids whose parents speak English as a second language, if at all, going to be as good with middle-class kids in develop thesis question white suburbs? Or vice versa? Teachers gladly teach bright students in homogenous groups with few disciplinary issues for term paper outline, less money; wouldn’t you? Too, studies show that giving teacher’s bonuses for extra work actually cuts into their productivity and develop thesis question, the quality of hancock on the elective, their work.
Paying car salesmen extra for more sales may work, but it doesn’t work with teachers; their motivations are very different. What makes more sense is to offer teachers of math, science and other disciplines where teacher shortages exist higher salaries based on supply and demand. Also, to develop question offer teachers with higher academic qualifications higher salaries to teach in the war zones that many of our urban school districts have become. Finally, no school reform movement should ignore the current structure of teacher employment and retirement, which encourages teachers never to take risks, change schools or try out work in other fields for short periods. The combination of Mcdonaldization of society ny times article, local control of school funding and union protection of question, longevity over everything else is deadly and keeps the hancock essays on the franchise worst teachers in front of classrooms for the longest time. Here is the letter I sent to thesis Obama after I heard his speech on television: Going to college is a great thing. Getting kids to graduate from high school is something we all should strive to sports importance do. But, we have to start making these high school diplomas mean something.
Right now, kids are sitting in classes they are not capable of passing. Be realistic, not everyone is college material and question, has the mental facilities to succeed in academic areas. Regardless, these are the subjects the kids today are being forced to take to get a diploma. As a teacher, I strive to do the school essay best for develop, my students daily. But, I am also realistic. I know that there are certain things my students cannot master and because of this I cannot teach on sports, as high a level as I would like to. Develop Thesis! I have to water down the topics and hopefully teach enough to get them to essay games pass the thesis state regents exams. I’m filling their heads with topics that are way over their heads and while they might pass, they are learning nothing. I have to do this because my kids need that high school diploma to get anywhere in life.
You also talk majestically of charter schools. I don’t understand why you won’t put the same effort into improving public schools. In New York City high schools there are 34 students in each class. In my very overcrowded school, there are kids who arrive at 7:15 AM and peter cowan, others that do not leave until after 5:00 PM. We have classes that meet in substandard trailers. We have class rooms with no windows or ventilation. Develop Thesis Question! We have two rooms made where there was once one. The walls between them are so thin that the of society from article sound of chalk on the black board is disruptive in the adjoining room. The response is free of errors of fact or interpretation with regard to the text. The response makes skillful use of textual evidence (quotations, paraphrases, or both), demonstrating a complete understanding of the source text. You'll need to show your understanding of the text on two different levels: the surface level of getting your facts right and cowan, the deeper level of getting the relationship of the details and the central ideas right. One of the most important ways you can show you've actually read the passage is develop thesis question, making sure you stick to what is cowan essay, said in the text . If you’re writing about things the author didn’t say, or things that contradict other things the author said, your argument will be fundamentally flawed.
For instance, take this quotation from a (made-up) passage about why a hot dog is not a sandwich: “The fact that you can’t, or wouldn’t, cut a hot dog in half and question, eat it that way, proves that a hot dog is once and for all NOT a sandwich” Here's an on the franchise example of a factually inaccurate paraphrasing of this quotation: The author builds his argument by develop discussing how, since hot-dogs are often served cut in half, this makes them different from sandwiches. The paraphrase contradicts the passage, and so would negatively affect your reading score. Now let's look at an accurate paraphrasing of the quotation: The author builds his argument by real estate letter discussing how, since hot-dogs are never served cut in half, they are therefore different from question sandwiches. It's also important to be faithful to games sports importance the text when you're using direct quotations from the passage. Misquoting or badly paraphrasing the author’s words weakens your essay, because the evidence you’re using to support your points is develop, faulty. Higher Level: Understanding of Central Ideas. Hancock Elective! The next step beyond being factually accurate about the passage is showing that you understand the central ideas of the text and how details of the passage relate back to this central idea. Develop Question! Why does this matter? In order to be able to explain why the author is persuasive, you need to be able to explain the structure of the argument.
And you can’t deconstruct the author's argument if you don’t understand the from ny times article central idea of the passage and how the details relate to it. Here's an develop thesis question example of a statement about paper, our fictional hot dogs are sandwiches passage that shows understanding of the central idea of the passage: Hodgman’s third primary defense of why hot dogs are not sandwiches is question, that a hot dog is not a subset of any other type of essay games sports importance food. He uses the analogy of asking the question “is cereal milk a broth, sauce, or gravy?” to show that making such a comparison between hot dogs and sandwiches is patently illogical. The above statement takes one step beyond merely being factually accurate to explain the relation between different parts of the passage (in this case, the develop question relation between the what is developing thinking skills, cereal milk? analogy and the hot dog/sandwich debate). Of course, if you want to score well in all three essay areas, you’ll need to do more in thesis question your essay than merely summarizing the author’s argument. This leads directly into the next grading area of the SAT Essay. The items covered under this criterion are the most important when it comes to writing a strong essay. You can use well-spelled vocabulary in sentences with varied structure all you want, but if you don't analyze the author's argument, demonstrate critical thinking, and support your position, you will not get a high Analysis score . The response offers little or no analysis or ineffective analysis of the source text and demonstrates little or no understanding of the analytic task.
The response identifies without explanation some aspects of the author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s choosing, Or numerous aspects of the response’s analysis are unwarranted based on the text. The response contains little or no support for claim(s) or point(s) made, or support is largely irrelevant. The response may not focus on features of the text that are relevant to school essay addressing the task, Or the response offers no discernible analysis (e.g., is largely or exclusively summary). Develop! The response offers limited analysis of the source text and school peter cowan, demonstrates only partial understanding of the analytical task. The response identifies and attempts to describe the author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s own choosing, but merely asserts rather than explains their importance, or one or more aspects of the response’s analysis are unwarranted based on develop, the text.
The response contains little or no support for claim(s) or point(s) made. The response may lack a clear focus on entry-level real cover letter, those features of the text that are most relevant to addressing the task. Develop Thesis Question! The response offers an effective analysis of the source text and demonstrates an understanding of the analytical task. The response competently evaluates the author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s own choosing. The response contains relevant and sufficient support for claim(s) or point(s) made. The response focuses primarily on Mcdonaldization of society from article, those features of the text that are most relevant to addressing the develop thesis question task. The response offers an insightful analysis of the source text and demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the analytical task.
The response offers a thorough, well-considered evaluation of the author’s use of evidence, reasoning, and/or stylistic and persuasive elements, and/or feature(s) of the student’s own choosing. The response contains relevant, sufficient, and strategically chosen support for claim(s) or point(s) made. The response focuses consistently on those features of the text that are most relevant to addressing the task. Model Outline! Because this category is develop question, so important, I've broken it down even further into its two different (but equally important) component parts to make sure everything is as clearly explained as possible. Critical thinking, also known as critical reasoning, also known as logic, is the skill that SAT essay graders are really looking to see displayed in the essay. You need to be able to evaluate and analyze the claim put forward in the prompt. This is where a lot of students may get tripped up, because they think “oh, well, if I can just write a lot, then I’ll do well.” While there is school essay, some truth to the assertion that longer essays tend to score higher, if you don’t display critical thinking you won’t be able to get a top score on your essay. What do I mean by develop thesis question critical thinking? Let's take the previous prompt example: Write an essay in which you explain how Hodgman builds an model paper argument to persuade his audience that the thesis hot dog cannot, and never should be, considered a sandwich.
An answer to this prompt that does not display critical thinking (and would fall into a 1 or 2 on the rubric) would be something like: The author argues that hot dogs aren’t sandwiches, which is persuasive to peter the reader. While this does evaluate the question prompt (by providing a statement that the author's claim is persuasive to the reader), there is no corresponding analysis. School! An answer to this prompt that displays critical thinking (and would net a higher score on thesis, the rubric) could be something like this: The author uses analogies to hammer home his point that hot dogs are not sandwiches. Because the elective readers will readily believe the first part of the analogy is true, they will be more likely to accept that the second part (that hot dogs aren't sandwiches) is true as well. See the difference? Critical thinking involves reasoning your way through a situation (analysis) as well as making a judgement (evaluation) . On the question SAT essay, however, you can’t just stop at abstract critical reasoning - analysis involves one more crucial step. Part II: Examples, Reasons, and Other Evidence (Support) The other piece of the puzzle (apparently this is a tiny puzzle) is making sure you are able to back up your point of model term view and critical thinking with concrete evidence . The SAT essay rubric says that the best (that is, 4-scoring) essay uses “ relevant, sufficient, and strategically chosen support for claim(s) or point(s) made. ” This means you can’t just stick to abstract reasoning like this: The author uses analogies to thesis hammer home his point that hot dogs are not sandwiches. Because the readers will readily believe the first part of the essays on the elective franchise analogy is true, they will be more likely to accept that the second part (that hot dogs aren't sandwiches) is true as well. Thesis! That explanation is a good starting point, but if you don't back up your point of view with quoted or paraphrased information from the model paper text to support your discussion of the way the question author builds his/her argument, you will not be able to get above a 3 on the Analysis portion of the essay (and possibly the Reading portion as well, if you don't show you've read the passage). Let's take a look of an example of how you might support an interpretation of the author's effect on school peter, the reader using facts from the passage : The author’s reference to the Biblical story about King Solomon elevates the debate about hot dogs from develop question a petty squabble between friends to a life-or-death disagreement.
The reader cannot help but see the parallels between the two situations and Mcdonaldization of society from article, thus find themselves agreeing with the author on this point. Does the author's reference to King Solomon actually elevate the develop thesis question debate, causing the reader to hancock franchise agree with the author? From the sentences above, it certainly seems plausible that it might. Thesis Question! While your facts do need to be correct, you get a little more leeway with your interpretations of how the author’s persuasive techniques might affect the audience. Peter Essay! As long as you can make a convincing argument for develop thesis question the effect a technique the author uses might have on the reader, you’ll be good. Say whaaat?! #tbt by tradlands, used under CC BY 2.0/Cropped and color-adjusted from original. Did I just blow your mind?

The response demonstrates general and vague word choice; word choice may be poor or inaccurate. The response may lack a formal style and objective tone. The response shows a weak control of the conventions of hancock essays on the franchise standard written English and may contain numerous errors that undermine the quality of writing. Develop Thesis! The response may lack a clear central claim or controlling idea or may deviate from the claim or idea over the course of the response. The response may include an ineffective introduction and/or conclusion. The response may demonstrate some progression of essay sports ideas within paragraphs but not throughout the response. The response shows a limited control of the conventions of standard written English and contains errors that detract from the quality of writing and may impede understanding. The response is cohesive and demonstrates a highly effective use and command of language. The response includes a precise central claim. The response includes a skillful introduction and conclusion. The response demonstrates a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas both within paragraphs and throughout the essay. The response has a wide variety in develop sentence structures. The response demonstrates a consistent use of precise word choice.
The response maintains a formal style and objective tone. The response shows a strong command of the conventions of standard written English and is free or virtually free of errors. Because there's a lot of entry-level commercial cover letter different factors that go into develop question, calculating your Writing score, I've divided the discussion of this rubric area into five separate items: One of the most basic rules of the SAT essay is that you need to express a clear opinion on the assignment (the prompt) . While in model term school (and everywhere else in life, pretty much) you’re encouraged to take into develop thesis question, account all sides of a topic, it behooves you to NOT do this on the SAT essay. Why? Because you only have 50 minutes to read the passage, analyze the cowan author's argument, and write the essay, there's no way you can discuss every single way in which the author builds his/her argument, every single detail of the passage, or a nuanced argument about what works and what doesn't work.
Instead, I recommend focusing your discussion on a few key ways the thesis question author is successful in persuading his/her audience of entry-level real cover his/her claim. Let’s go back to develop the assignment we've been using as an model paper example throughout this article: Write an essay in question which you explain how Hodgman builds an argument to entry-level commercial estate cover letter persuade his audience that the hot dog cannot, and never should be, considered a sandwich. Your instinct (trained from many years of schooling) might be to answer: There are a variety of ways in which the author builds his argument. This is a nice, vague statement that leaves you a lot of develop wiggle room. If you disagree with the author, it's also a way of avoiding having to say that the author is model, persuasive.
Don't fall into this trap! You do not necessarily have to agree with the develop thesis question author's claim in order to analyze how the author persuades his/her readers that the claim is true. Here's an cowan essay example of a precise central claim about the develop thesis example assignment: The author effectively builds his argument that hot dogs are not sandwiches by using logic, allusions to history and developing, mythology, and factual evidence. In contrast to the vague claim that There are a variety of ways in thesis which the author builds his argument, this thesis both specifies what the author's argument is and the ways in which he builds the argument (that you'll be discussing in the essay). While it's extremely important to make sure your essay has a clear point of view, strong critical reasoning, and support for your position, that's not enough to get you a top score. Critical Thinking Skills For Effective Reading! You need to make sure that your essay demonstrates a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas both within paragraphs and throughout the develop essay. For Effective! What does this mean? Part of the question way you can make sure your essay is well organized has to do with following standard essay construction points.
Don't write your essay in model outline one huge paragraph; instead, include an introduction (with your thesis stating your point of view), body paragraphs (one for each example, usually), and a conclusion. This structure might seem boring, but it really works to develop thesis question keep your essay organized, and the more clearly organized your essay is, the easier it will be for the essay grader to paper understand your critical reasoning. The second part of this criteria has to do with keeping your essay focused, making sure it contains a deliberate and highly effective progression of ideas. Develop Thesis! You can't just say well, I have an model term introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, so I guess my essay is organized and expect to get a 4/4 on your essay. You need to develop make sure that each paragraph is also organized . Model Term Outline! Recall the sample prompt: “Write an essay in which you explain how Hodgman builds an argument to develop thesis persuade his audience that the hot dog cannot, and never should be, considered a sandwich.” And our hypothetical thesis: The author effectively builds his argument that hot dogs are not sandwiches by using logic, allusions to reading history and mythology, and factual evidence. Let's say that you're writing the develop thesis question paragraph about the hancock essays on the elective author's use of thesis question logic to persuade his reader that hot dogs aren't sandwiches. You should NOT just list ways that the author is logical in support of his claim, then explain why logic in general is an effective persuasive device. While your points might all be valid, your essay would be better served by connecting each instance of logic in the passage with an explanation of model paper outline how that example of logic persuades the reader to agree with the author. Above all, it is imperative that you make your thesis (your central claim) clear in develop thesis the opening paragraph of your essay - this helps the grader keep track of essay importance your argument.
There's no reason you’d want to make following your reasoning more difficult for the person grading your essay (unless you’re cranky and don’t want to do well on the essay. Listen, I don’t want to develop question tell you how to live your life). In your essay, you should use a wide array of vocabulary (and use it correctly). An essay that scores a 4 in Writing on the grading rubric “demonstrates a consistent use of precise word choice.” You’re allowed a few errors, even on model term paper outline, a 4-scoring essay, so you can sometimes get away with misusing a word or two. In general, though, it’s best to question stick to using words you are certain you not only know the term outline meaning of, but also know how to use. If you’ve been studying up on vocab, make sure you practice using the words you’ve learned in sentences, and thesis question, have those sentences checked by someone who is good at writing (in English), before you use those words in an SAT essay. Creating elegant, non-awkward sentences is the thing I struggle most with under time pressure.
For instance, here’s my first try at the previous sentence: “Making sure a sentence structure makes sense is the thing that I have the most problems with when I’m writing in a short amount of term paper outline time” (hahaha NOPE - way too convoluted and wordy, self). As another example, take a look at these two excerpts from the hypothetical essay discussing how the question author persuaded his readers that a hot dog is Mcdonaldization ny times, not a sandwich: Score of 2: The author makes his point by critiquing the argument against him. The author pointed out the logical fallacy of develop thesis question saying a hot dog was a sandwich because it was meat sandwiched between two breads. The author thus persuades the reader his point makes sense to be agreed with and convinces them. The above sentences lack variety in structure (they all begin with the words the author), and the last sentence has serious flaws in its structure (it makes no sense). Score of 4: The author's rigorous examination of his opponent's position invites the reader, too, to consider this issue seriously. By laying out his reasoning, step by step, Hodgman makes it easy for the reader to follow along with his train of thought and skills for effective, arrive at the same destination that he has. This destination is Hodgman's claim that a hot dog is not a sandwich.
The above sentences demonstrate variety in sentence structure (they don't all begin with the same word and don't have the same underlying structure) that presumably forward the point of the essay. In general, if you're doing well in all the other Writing areas, your sentence structures will also naturally vary. If you're really worried that your sentences are not varied enough, however, my advice for working on demonstrating meaningful variety in develop thesis sentence structure (without ending up with terribly worded sentences) is twofold: Read over what you’ve written before you hand it in and change any wordings that seem awkward, clunky, or just plain incorrect. As you’re doing practice essays, have a friend, family member, or teacher who is model term outline, good at (English) writing look over your essays and point out thesis question, any issues that arise. This part of the Writing grade is all about the nitty gritty details of writing: grammar, punctuation, and commercial estate cover, spelling . Develop Thesis! It's rare that an essay with serious flaws in this area can score a 4/4 in Reading, Analysis, or Writing, because such persistent errors often interfere with meaning (that is, persistent errors make it difficult for the grader to understand what you're trying to get across). On the other hand, if they occur in small quantities, grammar/punctuation/spelling errors are also the reading things that are most likely to be overlooked.
If two essays are otherwise of equal quality, but one writer misspells definitely as definately and the other writer fails to explain how one of her examples supports her thesis, the first writer will receive a higher essay score. It's only when poor grammar, use of develop punctuation, and essay games importance, spelling start to make it difficult to understand your essay that the thesis question graders start penalizing you. My advice for working on developing critical thinking skills, this rubric area is the question same advice as for sentence structure: look over entry-level commercial cover letter, what you’ve written to develop thesis question double check for mistakes, and ask someone who’s good at writing to look over your practice essays and sports, point out develop thesis, your errors. If you're really struggling with spelling, simply typing up your (handwritten) essay into a program like Microsoft Word and running spellcheck can alert you to problems. We've also got a great set of articles up on our blog about SAT Writing questions that may help you better understand any grammatical errors you are making. How Do I Use The SAT Essay Grading Rubric? Essay on City Life vs. Village Life (2465 words) Essay on City Life vs. Village Life! One of the most striking features of industrial age is the growth of city life. In ancient times the develop question, people mostly lived in villages being engaged in agriculture. Cities arose here and there as centres of trade or seats of government. Today in all industrialized countries the situation has been reversed.
The urban population in England and the United States has expanded continuously over the rural population. New facilities of transport and communication have brought thousands of people nearer to each other and made it convenient for them to live together in hancock on the elective franchise large aggregations. The growth of cities is a special feature of modern age and as the city grows the whole character of society undergoes a change. There is a sharp difference between the city and village life though with the expansion of urban influence on the village this difference is becoming more and more a matter of degree. However, in develop thesis question spite of the recent trends of urbanisation the villages still retain many of their traditional features and present a sharp contrast with the urban life. In rural community the force of traditional mores and the bonds of family solidarity are more dominant than in the urban community. Essay Games Sports Importance. According to Biesanz and Biesanz, “In the rural community custom is the develop thesis question, king, the folkways and mores control most of behaviour,” The sense of group responsibility which tends to be more and model term paper, more dissolved in the growth of the city prevails in village life. The type of develop thesis, village family is generally patriarchal in which the status of the individual is the status of his family. There is less individual questioning and rebellion. The family determines as to whether and whom the individual should marry for the maintenance of family name.
There is lesser freedom in the selection of life partner. Commercial Real Cover Letter. There are few love-marriages. Not only marriage but also religion, recreation, occupation pre determined by family traditions. Any deviation from the establish-id family traditions especially in sex matters, is regarded an offence against family unity and hardly tolerated. The life of develop, all men and women is merged in family life. In short, family dominates individual’s life in village community. Moreover, the village community is too small to support a missionary society, like a Rotary Club. The family is the only organisation which performs the task of skills for effective, aid and protection. For such functions there is no formal organisation with a president and thesis question, secretary. On the other hand, in the city community life is conspicuous by the absence of estate, family life.
The anonymous character of the city frees the urban dweller from close moral control. Social control becomes the activity of specialized agencies. Family control is lessened. Police and courts, teachers and social workers take over the regulatory functions of the family circle. A “free lance” detached from develop question, family bonds is looked askance at in the village while such a person, even his norms of conduct, sexual and otherwise may pass unnoticed in the city and term, be admitted to those places where high class gentry goes. If a person violates family marriage customs he- is not boycotted by the urban community, an impersonalized world. According to Davis, “He can escape the oppressive control of any primary group when he wishes, simply by develop thesis question disappearing into school peter, the sea of strangers.” It may also be noted that the urban life is thesis question more regulated by essay the State than the rural life is develop thesis question regulated.
Even minor matters like disposal of garbage and refuse cannot be left to hancock, voluntary action. The government acquires many functions, some of which are community housekeeping duties. Thus, in a city as opposed to the village the mores and folkways are least counted on to handle the situation. In other words, the larger the city, the greater becomes the develop, problem of games sports importance, control and the more complex the agencies of secondary control. Secondly, a village community is marked by immediate contacts between its members. There is a strong ‘we-feeling’ in the rural community. We find members in a village community helping each other and sharing the joys and sorrows of each other. In the village everybody is known to everybody. Their relations are personal. Customers are not mere strangers but persons with whom all are acquainted.
From such contacts each person knows a great deal about his neighbours, their activities, preferences and attitudes. Status of each one in develop question the village community is well known. Written contracts are less important than a word of honour. Crime in village community is rare. Since there is critical thinking reading little secrecy, stolen goods cannot be used and are difficult to thesis question, dispose of. Things are done by mutual understanding. In city life, on the other hand, nearness counts much less. The inhabitants of a city hardly know each other. Sometimes, they do not know even their next-door neighbour nothing to speak of influencing their activities. In a big city like Bombay people living in the lower storey do not know the people living in the third or fourth storey.
There is an atmosphere of indifference and critical thinking skills, callousness in a city. In a city like Calcutta, an inhabitant may spend a whole day in the street and never see a person he knows, though he may see tens of develop, thousands of developing thinking for effective, people. Even friend are likely to be known only in a particular context and in a particular segment of life. In the words of Gist and Halbert, ‘The city encourages impersonal rather than personal relationships.” Most of the relations are indirect. Competition has a far greater velocity in the city than in the village. Life in a village community is simple and uniform. There are few ambitious men and fewer excitements.
The villagers lead a uniform life tilling land and rearing animals. The poor turning rich overnight or the rich being reduced to beggary in one day are cases unknown in the village.
The man of enterprise and adventurous spirit has no place in rural community. The city dweller becomes indifferent to extremes of develop thesis, all kinds. Indeed the distinction between public and private, between what is shown and what is concealed, is much sharper in the city. It is the public behaviour that the city regulates, the private behaviour it ignores. Another contrast between village and urban community is concerning the modes of production. School Cowan. In the village as a rule, only a predominant type of occupation, Le., agriculture prevails. Each family bakes its own bread and question, does its own washing, for all the environment, physical as well as social, is the games, same. The city, on the other hand, is the place for all, the semiskilled worker, the skilled artisan, the “paper-expert”, the technician, the artist, the develop thesis question, banker, the peter essay, teacher, the social reformer and many others.
It is a heterogeneous group of people engaged in various pursuits. Develop Question. The city tasks are divided and sub-divided to such an extreme that even the work of unskilled labour becomes specialized. The trend in the urban world is clearly in the direction of a larger percentage of specialized work leading to a multiplicity of organisations, economic and social. The residents of a city become affiliated with a number of organisations. Their social relations are mostly indirect and secondary. The process of selection for the specialized work is games keener. The management selects those who are best specialized in the work and ruthlessly reject all those who fall below the competitive standard.
The owner of special ability has greater chances of quick promotion. The individual is rated more in terms of accomplishments than he is rated in the rural community. The city sifts and develop question, segregates all of the members according to their ability and finds a fit place for each. Stability is the typical trait for the one mobility is the typical trait for develop, the other.” Specialization is also seen in the physical structure of the city. Developing Critical Thinking Skills. Distinctive areas are marked for different activities. Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab State, has been divided into different sectors, each sector with marked peculiarities. Industrialization and specialization have brought women to workshop and factory. The young men and women leave the rural community for urban community because the latter affords those more opportunities for employment and profits. But sometimes the men coming from the village may have to face disappointment and despair in the city. So one should leave the village for city after a deep and careful thought. The above are then the features that distinguish rural from urban life. In the city “opposite conditions are found”, aggregation ; instead of physical isolation; associations of many kind’s supplementing or supplanting the functions of family or categorical relationships; contacts with human beings and civilization diversity superseding contacts with nature; differentiation of economic classes and specialization of economic tasks, ranking and grading men in ways often unknown in the country; limited and intensified work, with its endless varieties and disparities of opportunity and of fortune creating an intricate design of competitive living traditionally alien to the rural sense.” It may, however, be pointed out that urbanization of the rural population has reduced the thesis question, differences between rural and urban community. The urban influence on the rural people can be seen in matters like social organisation, family organisation, food habits, standard of living, dress habits, cosmetics, religion, rituals, beliefs etc. The rural people are taking over the urban modes of Mcdonaldization of society from article, life and thesis question, as this has been happening, the rural way of school essay, life has been withering away. The more the villages are linked with the city through modes of transport and communication, the faster will be the urban influence on the rural life. This may lead to develop thesis question, assimilation of the rural people into the urban way of life thereby eliminating the attitudinal and other cultural differences between townsmen and countrymen.
