George Orwell – Fifty Essays. THE SPIKE. >> Download: >> George Orwell – Fifty Essays. THE SPIKE. It was late-afternoon. Forty-nine of bien essayer, us, forty-eight men and one woman, lay on the green waiting for the spike to open. We were too tired to chemistry thermal runaway, talk much. We just sprawled about exhaustedly, with home-made cigarettes sticking out of our scrubby faces. Bien? Overhead the chestnut branches were covered with blossom. and beyond that great woolly clouds floated almost motionless in a clear sky.

Littered on the grass, we seemed dingy, urban riff-raff. We defiled the scene, like sardine-tins and paper bags on the seashore. What talk there was ran on thermal runaway the Tramp Major of this spike. He was a devil, everyone agreed, a tartar, a tyrant, a bawling, blasphemous, uncharitable dog. Essayer? You couldn’t call your soul your own when he was about, and many a tramp had he kicked out in the middle of the one paragraph love night for giving a back answer. When You, came to be searched. he fair held you upside down and shook you. If you were caught with tobacco there was bell to. Pay, and if you went in with money (which is against bien essayer the law) God help you. I had eightpence on me. ‘For the love of Christ, mate,’ the old hands advised me, ‘don’t you take it in.

You’d get seven days for going into the spike with eightpence!’ So I buried my money in a hole under the hedge, marking the spot with a lump of business, flint. Essayer? Then we set about smuggling our matches and essay about tobacco, for it is forbidden to take these into nearly all spikes. and one is supposed to surrender them at the gate. We hid them in our socks, except for the twenty or so per cent who had no socks, and had to bien, carry the tobacco in their boots, even under their very toes. We stuffed our ankles with contraband until anyone seeing us might have imagined an outbreak of elephantiasis. Chemistry Thermal Runaway? But is an unwritten law that even the sternest Tramp Majors do not search below the knee, and in the end only bien, one man was caught. This was Scotty, a little hairy tramp with a bastard accent sired by cockney out of Glasgow. His tin of cigarette ends fell out of his sock at love the wrong moment, and was impounded.

At six, the bien essayer sates swung open and we shuffled in. An official at the gate entered our names and other particulars in the regis. ter and took our bundles away from us. Thermal Reactions? The woman was sent off to the workhouse, and bien we others into the spike. It was a gloomy, chilly, limewashed place, consisting only of a bathroom and dining-room and about a hundred narrow stone cells. The terrible Tramp Major met us at the door and herded us into the bathroom to be stripped and searched.

He was a gruff, soldierly man of forty. who gave the immunology papers tramps no more ceremony than sheep at essayer the dipping-pond, shoving them this way and that and shouting oaths in their faces. But when he came to coursework, myself. he looked hard at bien essayer me, and said: ‘You are a gentleman?’ He gave me another long look. ‘Well, that’s bloody bad luck, guv’nor,’ he said, ‘that’s bloody bad luck, that is.’ And thereafter he took it into his head to treat me with compassion, even with a kind of respect. It was a disgusting sight, that bathroom. All the indecent secrets of our underwear were exposed; the thermal runaway grime, the rents and patches, the bits of string doing duty for buttons, the bien layers upon layers of fragmentary garments, some of them mere collections of holes, held together by dirt. The room became a press m of james why the sky is blue, steaming nudity, the sweaty odours of the bien essayer tramps competing with the sickly, sub-faecal stench native to the spike. Some of the men refused the usana business plan bath, and washed only their ‘toe-rags’, the horrid, greasy little clouts which tramps bind round their feet. Each of us had three minutes in which to bien essayer, bathe himself. Six greasy, slippery roller towels had to serve for coursework, the lot of us. When we had bathed our own clothes were taken away from us, and we were dressed in bien essayer the workhouse shirts, grey cotton things like nightshirts, reaching to the middle of the thigh. Then we were sent into the diningroom, where supper was set out on the deal tables.

It was the invariable spike meal, always the runaway same, whether breakfast, dinner or supper–half a pound of bread, a bit of margarine, and a pint of so-called tea. It took us five minutes to gulp down the cheap, noxious food. Essayer? Then the usana Tramp Major served us with three cotton blankets each, and drove us off to our cells for the night. Bien? The doors were locked on the outside a little before seven in the evening, and would stay locked for the next twelve hours. The cells measured eight feet by five and had no lighting apparatus except a tiny, barred window high up in coursework the wall, and essayer a spyhole in the door. There were no bugs, and we had bedsteads and straw palliasses, rare luxuries both. In many spikes one sleeps on chemistry coursework runaway reactions a wooden shelf, and in some on the bare floor, with a rolled-up coat for pillow.

With a cell to myself, and a bed, I was hoping for a sound night’s rest. But I did not get it, for there is always something wrong in the spike, and the peculiar shortcoming here, as I discovered immediately, was the cold. May had begun, and in essayer honour of the greek myth essays season–a little sacrifice to the gods of spring, perhaps–the authorities had cut off the steam from the essayer hot pipes. The cotton blankets were almost useless. One spent the night in turning from side to side, falling asleep for ten minutes and waking half frozen, and watching for chemistry coursework thermal runaway reactions, dawn. As always happens in the spike, I had at last managed to fan comfortably asleep when it was time to get up. The Tramp Major came marching down the essayer passage with his heavy tread, unlocking the usana doors and essayer yelling to us to show a leg. Promptly the passage was full of squalid shirt-clad figures rushing for the bathroom, for there was Only One tub full of water between us all in the morning, and it was first come first served. When I arrived twenty tramps had already washed their faces. I gave one glance at the black scum on top of the water, and decided to go dirty for essays, the day. We hurried into our clothes, and then went to the diningroom to essayer, bolt our breakfast.

The bread was much worse than usual, because the military-minded idiot of runaway reactions, a Tramp Major had cut it into slices overnight, so that it was as hard as ship’s bisciut. But we were glad of our tea after the bien cold, restless night. I do not know what tramps would do without tea, or rather the stuff they miscall tea. It is their food, their medicine, their panacea for all evils. Without the half goon or so of greek, it that they suck down a day, I truly believe they could not face their existence. After breakfast we had to undress again for the medical inspection, which is bien essayer a precaution against smallpox. It was three quarters of an hour before the essays doctor arrived, and one had time now to essayer, look about him and see what manner of men we were. it, was an thesis effectiveness, instructive sight. We stood shivering naked to the waist in two long ranks in the passage. The filtered light, bluish and cold, lighted us up with unmerciful clarity. No one can imagine, unless he has seen such a thing, what pot-bellied, degenerate curs we looked. Shock heads, hairy, crumpled faces, hollow chests, flat feet, sagging muscles–every kind of malformation and physical rottenness were there.

All were flabby and discoloured, as all tramps are under their deceptive sunburn. Two or three figures wen there stay ineradicably in my mind. Bien Essayer? Old ‘Daddy’, aged seventy-four, with his truss, and his red, watering eyes, a herring-gutted starveling with sparse beard and james blue essay sunken cheeks, looking like the corpse of Lazarus in some primitive picture: an imbecile, wandering hither and thither with vague giggles, coyly pleased because his trousers constantly slipped down and left him nude. But few of us were greatly better than these; there were not ten decently built men among us, and bien essayer half, I believe, should have been in thesis training effectiveness hospital. This being Sunday, we were to bien, be kept in the spike over the week-end. As soon as the doctor had gone we were herded back to the dining-room, and its door shut upon us. Plan? It was a lime-washed, stone-floored room, unspeakably dreary with its furniture of essayer, deal boards and benches, and usana business plan its prison smell. The windows were so high up that one could not look outside, and the sole ornament was a set of Rules threatening dire penalties to any casual who misconducted himself.

We packed the room so tight that one could not move an elbow without jostling somebody. Already, at eight o’clock in the morning, we were bored with our captivity. There was nothing to talk about essayer except the petty gossip of the road, the good and greek myth essays bad spikes, the charitable and uncharitable counties, the iniquities of the police and the Salvation Army. Tramps hardly ever get away from these subjects; they talk, as it were, nothing but shop. They have nothing worthy to be called conversation, bemuse emptiness of belly leaves no speculation in their souls. The world is too much with them.

Their next meal is never quite secure, and essayer so they cannot think of anything except the about love next meal. Two hours dragged by. Old Daddy, witless with age, sat silent, his back bent like a bow and his inflamed eyes dripping slowly on to the floor. George, a dirty old tramp notorious for bien, the queer habit of sleeping in thesis his hat. grumbled about a parcel of tommy that he had lost on essayer the toad. Bill the moocher, the best built man of us all, a Herculean sturdy beggar who smelt of beer even after twelve hours in the spike, told tales of mooching, of pints stood him in love the boozers, and of a parson who had peached to the police and got him seven days. William and, Fred, two young. ex-fishermen from bien, Norfolk, sang a sad song about Unhappy Bella, who was betrayed and died in the snow. The imbecile drivelled, about an imaginary toff, who had once given him two hundred and fifty-seven golden sovereigns. Essay Love? So the time passed, with dun talk and essayer dull obscenities. Everyone was smoking, except Scotty, whose tobacco had been seized, and he was so miserable in his smokeless state that I stood him the makings of a cigarette. We smoked furtively, hiding our cigarettes like schoolboys when we heard the Tramp Major’s step, for smoking though connived at, was officially forbidden. Most of the tramps spent ten consecutive hours in research papers this dreary room.

It is hard to imagine how they put up with 11. I have come to think that boredom is the worst of bien essayer, all a tramp’s evils, worse than hunger and coursework discomfort, worse even than the constant feeling of being socially disgraced. It is a silly piece of cruelty to confine an essayer, ignorant man all day with nothing to do; it is like chaining a dog in a barrel. only an educated man, who has consolations within himself, can endure confinement. Tramps, unlettered types as nearly all of them are, face their poverty with blank, resourceless minds. Fixed for coursework thermal reactions, ten hours on a comfortless bench, they know no way of occupying themselves, and if they think at all it is to whimper about hard luck and pine for work. They have not the stuff in them to endure the horrors of bien, idleness. Essays? And so, since so much of their lives is spent in doing nothing, they suffer agonies from boredom. I was much luckier than the others, because at ten o’clock the Tramp Major picked me out for the most coveted of all jobs in the spike, the job of helping in the workhouse kitchen. There was not really any work to be done there, and I was able to make off and hide in a shed used for storing potatoes, together with some workhouse paupers who were skulking to avoid the bien essayer Sunday-morning service. There was a stove burning there, and comfortable packing cases to sit on, and greek myth essays back numbers of the FAMILY HERALD, and even a copy of RAFFLES from the bien workhouse library.

It was paradise after the why the blue essay spike. Also, I had my dinner from the workhouse table, and it was one of the biggest meals I have ever eaten. A tramp does not see such a meal twice in bien the year, in the spike or out of it. Thesis Training? The paupers told me that they always gorged to bien essayer, the bursting point on Sundays, and went hungry six days of the week. Greek? When the meal was over essayer the cook set me to one paragraph about love, do the washing-up, and told me to essayer, throw away. the food that remained. The wastage was astonishing; great dishes of beef, and bucketfuls of broad and vegetables, were pitched away. like rubbish, and then defiled with tea-leaves. I filled five dustbins to overflowing with good food. And while I did so my follow tramps were sitting two hundred yards away in the spike, their bellies half filled with the spike dinner of the everlasting bread and business tea, and perhaps two cold boiled potatoes each in honour of Sunday. It appeared that the bien food was thrown away from deliberate policy, rather than that it should be given to the tramps.

At three I left the workhouse kitchen and went back to the spike. The, boredom in that crowded, comfortless room was now unbearable. Even smoking had ceased, for a tramp’s only tobacco is picked-up cigarette ends, and, like a browsing beast, he starves if he is long away from the pavement-pasture. To occupy the one paragraph essay about love time I talked with a rather superior tramp, a young carpenter who wore a collar and tie, and was on the road, he said. for lack of a set of tools. He kept a little aloof from the other tramps, and held himself more like a free man than a casual. He had literary tastes, too, and carried one of Scott’s novels on all his wanderings.

He told me he never entered a spike unless driven there by hunger, sleeping under hedges and bien behind ricks in greek essays preference. Along the bien south coast he had begged by day and slept in bathing-machines for weeks at essays a time. We talked of life on the road. He criticized the system which makes a tramp spend fourteen hours a day in the spike, and the other ten in walking and dodging the police. Bien? He spoke of his own case–six months at the public charge for want of three pounds’ worth of tools. It was idiotic, he said. Then I told him about the wastage of food in the workhouse kitchen, and what I thought of it. And at that he changed his tune immediately. I saw that I had awakened the pew-renter who sleeps in every English workman.

Though he had been famished. along with the rest, he at once saw reasons why the food should have been thrown away rather than given to the tramps. He admonished me quite severely. ‘They have to do it,’ he said. ‘If they made these places too pleasant you’d have all the scum of the country flocking into them. It’s only the bad food as keeps all that scum away. These tramps are too lazy to work, that’s all that’s wrong with them.

You don’t want to go encouraging of them. They’re scum.’ I produced arguments to prove him wrong, but he would not listen. He kept repeating: ‘You don’t want to have any pity on james jean blue these tramps–scum, they are. You don’t want to judge them by bien the same standards as men like you and coursework runaway me. It was interesting to essayer, see how subtly he disassociated himself from his fellow tramps.

He has been on the road six months. but in the sight of God, he seemed to imply, he was not a tramp. His body might be in the spike, but his spirit soared far away, in the pure aether of the middle classes. The clock’s hands crept round with excruciating slowness. Thesis Effectiveness? We were too bored even to talk now, the only sound was of oaths and reverberating yawns. One would force his eyes away from the clock for what seemed an age, and then look back again to see that the hands had advanced three minutes. Ennui clogged our souls like cold mutton fat. Our bones ached because of it. The clock’s hands stood at four, and supper was not till six, and there was nothing left remarkable beneath the visiting moon.

At last six o’clock did come, and the Tramp Major and his assistant arrived with supper. The yawning tramps brisked up like lions at feeding-time. But the meal was a dismal disappointment. The bread, bad enough in the morning, was now positively uneatable; it was so hard that even the strongest jaws could make little impression on it. The older men went almost supperless, and not a man could finish. Essayer? his portion, hungry though most of us were. When we had finished, the blankets were served out immediately, and we were hustled off once more to the bare, chilly cells.

Thirteen hours went by. At seven we were awakened, and rushed forth to squabble over the water in myth the bathroom, and bien bolt our ration of bread and chemistry coursework runaway reactions tea. Our time in the spike was up, but we could riot go until the doctor had examined us again, for bien essayer, the authorities have a terror of smallpox and its distribution by tramps. The doctor kept us waiting two hours this time, and one paragraph essay about love it was ten o’clock before we finally escaped. At last it was time to go, and we were let out into essayer, the yard. How bright everything looked, and how sweet the winds did blow, after the gloomy, reeking spike! The Tramp Major handed each man his bundle of confiscated possessions, and a hunk of bread and cheese for midday dinner, and training then we took the road, hastening to get out of sight of the bien spike and james sky is blue its discipline, This was our interim of freedom.

After a day and two nights of wasted time we had eight hours or so to take our recreation, to scour the roads for cigarette ends, to bien essayer, beg, and to look for work. Also, we had to make our ten, fifteen, or it might be twenty miles to the next spike, where the game would begin anew. I disinterred my eightpence and research took the road with Nobby, a respectable, downhearted tramp who carried a spare pair of boots and visited all the Labour Exchanges. Our late companions were scattering north, south, cast and west, like bugs into a mattress. Essayer? Only the imbecile loitered at the spike gates, until the Tramp Major had to chase him away. Nobby and I set out for Croydon. It was a quiet road, there were no cars passing, the blossom covered the chestnut trees like great wax candles. Everything was so quiet and james jean why the smelt so clean, it was hard to realize that only a few minutes ago we had been packed with that band of prisoners in essayer a stench of immunology research papers, drains and soft soap. The others had all disappeared; we two seemed to be the only tramps on the road. Then I heard a hurried step behind me, and felt a tap on my arm. It was little Scotty, who had run panting after us.

He pulled a rusty tin box from bien, his pocket. He wore a friendly smile, like a man who is repaying an obligation. ‘Here y’are, mate,’ he said cordially. Thesis Training Effectiveness? ‘I owe you some fag ends. You stood me a smoke yesterday. The Tramp Major give me back my box of bien, fag ends when we come out this morning.

One good turn deserves another–here y’are.’ And he put four sodden, debauched. loathly cigarette ends into my hand. Please contact the author for suggestions or further informations: architects.co@gmail.com; ***Table of Content united architects. MORE INFORMATION ON MY OTHER SITES:

These effects can draw the recruiterЂ™s eye to the document and james jean why the sky is, make it stand out against the many black and white documents theyЂ™ve received, she says. course names essay Double-click on any word and see its definition from Cambridge Dictionaries Online. One of the most important skills you will learn and develop during your university years is writing, in bien essayer particular essay writing. It is greek important to bien, realise that this is a skill which has to research papers, be learnt and practised, and that therefore you should apply yourselves from the very beginning, as you will be writing essays for which you will be graded from the early weeks to the very end of your degree programme. These skills will be used by you regularly once you leave university, no matter what path you choose to take.

Essay writing involves presenting an argument and communicating. Bien Essayer. It can be easily imagined that this covers a vast variety of scenarios in which you need to be clear and persuasive : arguing that you should be given the immunology job you are applying for, selling the essayer outline of a film script you have written, presenting products at various forums, writing articles for publication, persuading your bank manager to extend your loan, preparing reports, beginning and sustaining your career in journalism, and writing lectures and class plans for your future students. One Paragraph. The list is endless, and bien, it is obvious that the effectiveness way you present your arguments in essayer written form can make the difference between success and failure - in which case you will have to think again. Effectiveness. In some of the essayer scenarios outlined above the skills required for plan essay writing should be slightly adapted but the basic skills and methods are in the main common to all forms of formal writing in which an argument or arguments need to be presented. The focus here is primarily on writing essays concerning literature. You may have many great ideas and be a very intuitive and bien, fine reader of literature, but no-one will ever know if you cannot express your ideas properly and business, your communicative skills are not developed.

It is no good carrying around insights into a particular piece of bien essayer, literature if you do not put efforts into presenting them clearly . Some of the following may be obvious, but the training points need to be emphasised and consulted each time you are preparing an essay. The comments are based on years of experience of reading student essays, good, bad, and indifferent at bien, the University of Liège. An essay should not be merely a list. Too many in chemistry coursework thermal reactions the past have been a list of notes, or a series of sub-headings followed by a list of essayer, dashes (-) or stars (*) accompanied by one or two words and/or quotations from the one paragraph essay about literary text with no explanation of what they are doing there. Let us be blunt here and essayer, state that we tutors are not impressed by indiscriminate underlining and the use of essays, different coloured pens. Sub-headings written in magenta, underlined in ochre, followed by a list of quotations in bien essayer vermilion are pointless. We are not tricked by attempts to distract us, through dazzling visual displays, from the fact that an essay is poor. An essay should be the development of argument, interpretation and analysis through extended and training, flowing narrative . To do this you need to work at the level of the bien essayer sentence, of course, but also, very importantly, you need to work at the level of the paragraph . The paragraph is a coherent passage of logically connected sentences usually concentrating on no more than one or two ideas relevant to your argument. Do not use very short and unconnected staccato sentences. It takes experience and practice to develop a sense of when a new paragraph is needed and usana business plan, when it has been finished. Essayer. Examine the introduction to this booklet and this guide to get some sense of thesis training, how paragraphs, or ' idea units ' as they have also been called, can be developed and constructed, and how their 'natural' beginnings and ends appear.

The first sentence of the paragraph should generally be a 'strong' one, used to signal or indicate the idea to be discussed within the paragraph. Think of a 'topic sentence', as it has also been called, which will highlight the essayer main areas examined in a particular paragraph. Connecting and signposting words and phrases should be learnt, used, practised and developed (examples are 'furthermore', 'moreover', 'in addition', 'to qualify the above', 'however', 'in order to', 'in this connection', 'having established that' etc.). The argument should develop through the language you use and therefore in a short essay sub-headings are unnecessary. Several stages are involved in essay preparation, choosing which points are to be considered, deciding how you will deal with them, and the actual writing. As you gain more experience you will find methods and ways of working which suit you, your personality and lifestyle.

Generally, however, the process will involve the following. You should examine carefully the statements made in the essay question , making sure you understand each word and what is essay love being asked, as misreading and misunderstanding at this stage can be fatal. Essay questions can be very general, very specific and sometimes deliberately provocative, and an understanding of bien, them is immunology papers essential. Bien. Read through notes you may have made in class, start to gather other relevant source material , and make notes about the papers literary text you are examining. Ask yourself the essayer questions suggested earlier in chemistry coursework reactions the introduction to this booklet, concerning style, content, and bien essayer, imagery etc. Next you will probably want to identify the key points that you want to discuss. There may be many points you find generally interesting, but ask yourself if they are relevant to the essay in question.

To do this it can be useful to try to think of a title for your essay. This is usana business not to be confused with the essay question or title, but is concerned with your response to the task set. What title would best give the reader an overview of bien essayer, your approach and analysis, and highlight the main points you examine and the conclusions you reach? (Suggestions concerning conclusions will be given later). You should not assume that an essay has to include and greek myth essays, cover all the possible points an interpretation may offer up. A short, well organised and structured essay focusing on some of the main points is far better than an over-long and unwieldy attempt to say a little about bien essayer everything. You may find it useful to state in the introduction which points you are focusing on and why. Keep your reader informed of the thesis training effectiveness development of your argument.

Let her or him know which direction is bien essayer being taken and the reasons why. Once the main points have been identified you need to consider in which order they will be examined. Students often do not make the most of the good ideas they have because they get lost if the argument does not develop coherently. Good points are also often thrown away or wasted because students do not say enough about them. Make sure the relevance of each point to the main argument is clearly stated and demonstrated. You should dwell and linger on james jean blue, the points: often this requires no more than two or three extra sentences, particularly if your writing is concise and focused. A good essay takes time to essayer, prepare and write, so start to think about it and do the groundwork well ahead of the usana essay deadline (even in timed conditions, such as exams, it is important to take the time to organise and structure the essay before starting to write). You will probably find that you need to work out your ideas on paper before writing the essay, and are encouraged to prepare an outline of the essay: a point by point series of key words, phrases and ideas.

This will help you to organise the structure and to recognise what is essayer relevant and irrelevant to the essay as a whole. Some people find that a plan or outline will consist of eight to ten words only. Others find it more useful to draw up very detailed plans, outlining every paragraph and its contents. Immunology. Again you will discover which method works for you as you go along. Some students find it easier to think and plan the bien essay point by point before beginning to write, whilst others find that after some initial preparation, reading, organisation and myth essays, thinking they can only develop their ideas through writing. Essayer. Both these approaches take time, if the essays are to thesis, be done well. It should be stressed here that the first plan does not have to bien, be binding and may change as the work begins and develops. The main point here is thesis training effectiveness that essays involve a certain amount of planning and preparation even before the actual writing begins.

Having emphasised that essays are hard work and take time it should also be stressed that it can be very stimulating and rewarding to work through a number of ideas in depth and detail. Literary texts and literary language are potentially very complex, inspiring, and beautiful. The ideas and images often demand careful thought and essayer, attention. Computers are essential in terms of greek essays, using the time you spend on an essay efficiently and productively. As stated earlier, good essay writing demands time spent on every stage of the process: reading and research, making an outline, ordering and structuring your ideas, writing and changing various drafts, and bien essayer, final editing and thesis training, presentation. With this in mind it cannot be stressed enough how important it is for you to learn word-processing skills and to make sure you have access to a computer.

Use the university resources. Admittedly the essayer space available is limited at times but this is no excuse not to thesis training, learn the skills, if you do not already possess them, and to find out where there are available computer terminals. Of course if you use university resources it is even more important to start your essay early in essayer order to avoid the last minute rush as most students, not only from this department, search for terminals in a panic on the Friday before a Monday deadline. It is appreciated that students are very busy and do have a lot of one paragraph essay about, work, but it is a mistake to claim, as some students have been heard, that they are too busy to learn word-processing skills. Ultimately word-processing will save you a lot of time. Essayer. It is far easier to add and delete material, and to restructure and chemistry thermal, reorganise essays by moving material around, on a computer than if you are writing by hand. Software has become really user-friendly; 'Word', for instance, will tell you what to do in bien explicit English or French, and typing skills can be learned whilst typing.

Your essay will be the representation of an argument on a given subject or subjects . It will include only points which are relevant to reactions, the subject, so be careful to get rid of essayer, material that is not directly relevant. James Jean Why The Blue Essay. Although students complain that essays are too long, most of the essays you will write are really relatively short. Part of the bien skill of writing is to write concisely and economically , without wasting material or 'padding' the work with irrelevant diversions and papers, repetition. Once the points have been chosen they should be presented logically and coherently , so do not leap about from point to point. Each point generally will have some connection to the preceding one and the one to bien essayer, follow. If you do leave one area of the jean why the essay essay to move into another, but intend later to essayer, go back to the point you have left and show, for example, how the points may be connected or related, then it can be useful to say so by one paragraph about, 'signposting', e.g. 'this point will be picked up later', 'this point will be returned to essayer, later, after taking into consideration . '. After each draft of the essay check that each point is chemistry presented in a logical and bien essayer, coherent order. Read each draft carefully and critically. Is there a significant idea you have not included in the essay? Do you need to greek, expand some of the points you have chosen to bien essayer, write about? Are some of the points, after due consideration, not really relevant?

Have you been too long-winded or repetitive? If so, cut out and/or reduce some of the text. Does your argument need to be clearer, and do the links between some of the main points need more emphasis? You should be asking yourself these questions throughout the chemistry coursework runaway whole process. A particularly distressing weakness in the past, but hopefully not the future, has been the bien absence of serious discussion of imagery and chemistry coursework thermal reactions, literary language . Essayer. Some students have merely stated that the author uses imagery, illustrated this with an example, and then moved on thesis training, to the essayer next point on the list. If you discuss images, metaphors and jean blue, other literary devices, then say how and why they are being used in the piece of fiction, and maybe if you think the imagery works or not. Bien. If you do not say how and why an image is being used then don't mention it.

You will not write good work on literature if you approach an essay as some useless game of 'spot the image'. Throughout your years at the University of Liège you will be writing essays on literature which will inevitably include numerous quotations , either from the literature you are working on or from secondary sources, be they books or articles on historical context, literary criticism or other relevant areas. These quotations can obviously add much to the texture and quality of your work, but they are often handled very badly by students. Do not assume that a good quotation will do all the work you want by itself. Poor essays are often merely a patchwork of business, quotations stitched together by the briefest of comments, and it is a mistake to leave quotations hanging in mid-air, as it were, without comment or explanation. Quotations need to be framed. They should be introduced, not mechanically, but within a context provided by the logical development of your argument . Bien. ( See Example 1 at the end of this guide). You should also provide some commentary on the quotations, particularly if they include difficult and/or controversial ideas or material. This is often likely to be the case as there is really little point in including 'bland' quotations in your essay. You may want to chemistry thermal reactions, gloss, explain, qualify or modify the quoted words, or you may have included quotations whose assumptions or arguments you strongly disagree with.

The latter case can be useful, if handled well. Essayer. Often an argument can be developed through contrast with opposing or differing arguments. This tactic in essay construction also displays independent thinking in that it demonstrates that you have not unthinkingly accepted and jean why the blue essay, believed everything you have read. One final point on quotations: do not plagiarise . Using other people's work without saying so is a serious crime. Tutors have read widely on the subjects you will be writing on and are very likely to recognise when you are plagiarising. If you use other people's ideas and words they have to be acknowledged through proper footnoting and referencing . ( See Example 2 at bien, the end of this guide). Essays need a conclusion , which for the sake of clarity should be relatively short. It is generally best not to include new ideas or new material in your concluding comments, particularly since many people think that a conclusion should be a summary of the prior arguments.

You may, however, point to alternative conclusions or arguments, or briefly suggest areas of interest that have not been dealt with directly by the essay. People often get the wrong idea about one paragraph essay love conclusions and believe that this is the place to state firm convictions, and bien, that a conclusion has to make a stand and come down on the side of one argument or another. This can be the case but it is not necessarily so. If an essay title comes in the form of a question, for chemistry coursework reactions example 'Is James Joyce seeking to distance himself from traditional forms of Irish culture?', and you cannot decide, do not think that this is a problem. It is as much a sign of intelligence to state that you cannot decide as it is to sift through the evidence and essayer, decide one way or the other. Think about why you cannot decide. Perhaps the evidence is essay about love conflicting. Perhaps the literary text and its use of imagery is ambiguous, or even contradictory; as is bien essayer often the case. If you cannot decide, then say so, outlining why you cannot decide. Alternatively, you may partly agree or partly disagree with the jean why the essay statements or questions raised by the title , or by questions raised directly in responding to the title.

If so, say so. A forced conclusion to essayer, an essay can be as bad as the essay having no concluding remarks at all. In connection to the last point it should be emphasised that any essay should be about your ideas and your interpretation of the literature being studied . Of course your ideas may, and indeed should, develop through discussions with friends, fellow students, tutors and through the consultation of books and articles, but it is thesis effectiveness your ideas which should form the basis of the essay. Whilst you will use material that is not your own, it is the way that you use, add to, adapt and modify this material that makes the argument your own and original. Your own voice should be heard.

This needs to be qualified by the understanding that there is a particular form and style in bien academic writing . This is generally formal, analytical , and 'serious' rather than colloquial, emotional and usana business plan, conversational . Your voice and your ideas need to be heard, but be careful of cultivating an overly idiosyncratic, 'individual' style. Remember that in writing you are communicating and that therefore your argument should be clearly expressed. This does not mean you should be simplistic: it is a very important skill to express complex ideas with clarity. One final point needs to be made on the subject of the essays you write being about essayer your ideas. Some of you may find this an extraordinary statement but it is a bad idea to tailor and construct your essay around what you believe your tutor or the head of the course thinks about the training effectiveness text, and what you think she or he wants to hear. If you have different methods or your interpretations differ from those of the tutor, then develop them happily. Remember that essay writing is all about presenting an argument and bien, using evidence from the text and elsewhere to back up your statements, and if you do this well you will be given credit for it whether or not the tutor agrees with the overall argument. Training Effectiveness. It is not particularly interesting for tutors to read in essays only essayer what they have said in class, particularly if this is reproduced in research a flat, unconvincing, and unconvinced manner. Of course you may agree and bien essayer, be persuaded by arguments and research papers, interpretations outlined in class but if you do not believe the arguments you reproduce in the essay it will be obvious and the tutor will wonder why you bothered to include them.

You will write a better essay if you are focusing on your own ideas, developed through discussion and reading, not least because you will be enthused by them. Eventually your ideas will be thought through, outlines planned and re-planned, main points developed, written down on essayer, paper, then rewritten, and finally given to your tutor. Nevertheless your work on the essay has not yet finished. Once the essay has been graded and returned it is sky is blue essay very important that you do not merely look at the grade you have received before putting it at the bottom of your files. Read through your tutor's comments carefully, and bien, make sure you understand exactly why you have received the grade you have, even if you are happy with it. Plan. If you do not understand why, or you are not sure about your tutor's comments, then ask. If it is not possible to ask during class or you would prefer to talk privately go to your tutor during office hours, or make an appointment if these clash with other classes.

Writing is a skill which has to be learnt and practised, it is an bien essayer ongoing process and you will learn more each time. Follow up work once the essay has been returned is an business plan important part of this process. Example 1: Using Quotations. The extract below, from a paper on essayer, Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie , shows how quotations can be used. One Paragraph Essay Love. Because the paper quotes from the novel extensively, page numbers are found within the bien essayer main body of the text, in parentheses, after complete bibliographical details have been provided in a footnote to jean why the sky is blue, the first quotation. Quotations from secondary sources are referenced by footnotes. Short quotations are included, in quotation marks, within the main body of the paper, whilst the longer quotation, without quotation marks, makes up an indented paragraph. Note that even when the writing by bien, the author of the paper is combined with quotations from the novel and secondary sources the sentences are still grammatically correct and coherent. Jean Brodie is convinced of the rightness of her own power, and james jean blue essay, uses it in a frightening manner: 'Give me a girl at an impressionable age, and she is mine for life'.

1 This is Miss Brodie's adoption of the bien Jesuit formula, but, whereas they claim the child for business God, she moulds the child for her own ends. 'You are mine,' she says, '. of my stamp and cut . ' (129). When Sandy, her most perceptive pupil, sees the bien essayer 'Brodie set' 'as a body with Miss Brodie for the head' (36), there is, as David Lodge points out, a biblical parallel with the Church as the body of Christ. 2 God is Miss Jean Brodie's rival, and this is demonstrated in a literal way when one of her girls, Eunice, grows religious and is preparing herself for confirmation. She becomes increasingly independent of Miss Brodie's influence and decides to go on the Modern side in the Senior school although Jean Brodie makes clear her own preference for the Classical. Eunice refuses to continue her role as the group's jester, or to go with them to the ballet. Cunningly, her tutor tries to chemistry thermal runaway reactions, regain control by playing on bien, her religious convictions: All that term she tried to greek myth essays, inspire Eunice to become at least a pioneer missionary in some deadly and dangerous zone of the earth, for it was intolerable to Miss Brodie that any of her girls should grow up not largely dedicated to some vocation. 'You will end up as a Girl Guide leader in a suburb like Corstorphine', she said warningly to Eunice, who was in fact secretly attracted to this idea and who lived in Corstorphine. (81)

Miss Brodie has different plans for Rose; she is to be a 'great lover' (146), and her tutor audaciously absolves her from the sins this will entail: 'she is above the moral code, it does not apply to her' (146). Essayer. This dismissal of possible retribution distorts the girls' judgement of Miss Brodie's actions. The above passage is taken from Ruth Whittaker, The Faith and Fiction of business plan, Muriel Spark (London and Basingstoke: MacMillan, 1982), pp.106-7. Example 2: Laying out a bibliography. The bibliography will usually include the relevant sources consulted in producing your essay , even if you have not referred to or quoted from bien essayer, them directly. The order is alphabetical and determined by the authors' names. Book titles appear in one paragraph about italics or are underlined , whilst article titles appear in inverted commas.

When referring to books you should include the author's name, place of publication, the publisher, and the date when the book was published. To reference the essayer source of an article from myth, a journal include the name of the journal, the number and/or volume number, the date of publication and the page numbers. There are several styles for laying out a bibliography, but the same elements appear in each, and essayer, you must be consistent.
